Broadbeach has long been regarded as one of our wining, dining and shopping. With a number of ‘stayers’ boasting staunch followers for many moons, sprinkled with a hearty helping of shiny new eats and drinks players, nothing can dull the sparkle of this burb’s A-grade entertainer status.

Here are precisely 17 reasons why locals – and Gold Coasters far and wide – love themselves a piece of our much-loved Broady.

Social Eating House + Bar
If you’re a foodie, this is your go-to. A modern Australian sensation, Social has more hats than a Milliner’s workshop. With Executive Chef Matthew Jefferson in charge, you’ll experience a carefully curated range of bar snacks, charcuterie, and small and large share plates, all featuring the finest Australian ingredients and paired to perfection. A meal here is worth.every.cent.

The Star Gold Coast
If ever there was a reason to get a babysitter, it’s for a session at The Star. Between the live music and amazing food at the Garden Kitchen & Bar, award-winning Cantonese, Japanese and modern Australian cuisine at Uncle Su, Kiyomi, and Nineteen at The Star, authentic Italian eats at Cucina Vivo, the ultimate buffet experience at Harvest Buffet, a few bevvies at the new-look Atrium Bar and/or the Insta-fave rooftop lounge bar at Nineteen, who needs to go anywhere else?
Where: 1 Casino Drive, Broadbeach

Broadbeach Bowls Club
Nothing says a chilled GC arvo like a game of barefoot bowls with a brew in hand. Another enduring favourite amongst the local set here on the GC, Broadbeach Bowls Club never fails to deliver a feel-good time for young and old. They serve up big portions of all your go-to pub-grub meals and do a great canape package for a laid-back birthday or celebration.

Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant
If you’re after a tried and tested, long-standing comedic cabaret, good ‘ole Dracs has been serving up frights, food and frivolity since we were all ankle-biters. Most people are sold when they hear there’s a ghost train alone, let alone the actual show (which changes every so often, so there’s always a reason to go back), banquet dinner…and shots in syringes!
Where: Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach

Aloha Bar and Dining
This tropical hidden treasure is all fun vibes, good food and cracking good times. Popular for its hospo nights, taco Thursdays, karaoke nights, live music and pumping DJs, there’s always something going on here. The tapas always deliver the feels (bao buns…I die!!), the Cucumber and Jalapeno Margi is (too) easy to drink, and we never tire of the super cute fit-out.

Sofia’s Restaurant & Bar
With an impressive contemporary Coastal European menu, we are completely besotted with Sofia’s…and we’re not alone. A meal here is all about enjoying and sharing simple, delicious food with your favourite people – as it should be, and truly encapsulates the famous words ‘That’s Amore’. Also, you heard it here first but Sofia’s is on the move. Watch this space!

Elk Espresso
Have you ever seen this place anything but bulging at the seams? Aaaand of course you haven’t. Since its pre-migration days just up the road, it’s had an army of raving fans and yes, this obvs includes us. A hop, skip and a jump from the beach, the coffee is all-time, the seasonal menus are heavenly, and they even do a Boozy Bottomless Brunch. And sold.

Blues on Broadbeach
So unlike our other listings, it may not be here 24/7 but it’s that much of a Broady icon that it would be criminal not to throw it a mention. As the name suggests, it brings us world-class blues and jazz music from locals and famous acts alike, performing across multiple venues over four unforgettable days. And it’s free, and sorry but when does that ever happen?

CHA CHA Japanese Restaurant
Gold Coasters have been CHA CHA bound for an authentic Japanese nosh-up which won’t break the bank for years, and that’s not about to change any time soon. The banquet menu is divine and every visit you’ll experience the same level of scrumptiousness. But the soy on the dim sum…it’s BYO and it’s hard to find an already affordable yet high-quality restaurant offering our 3 favourite letters. Score.

The Oasis
An everyday escape for locals, The Oasis is one of our numero uno shopping centres and for good reason. Not only some unique fashion boutiques live here, but the sheer number of amazing eateries is tres impressive. In addition to the ones we highlight in this article, we’re talking Mario’s, Madisons Café and Patisserie, Spice Kitchen and Bar, and The Broadbeach Tavern to name just a few. It’s a #OneStopShop.

Soho House Bar
Just look for the London-esk red phone box and you know good times await. An intimate, hidden gem-adorned in graffiti and jam-packed with peeps sipping and bopping along to the sweet sounds of live DJ’s, this joint is seriously cool. The cocktail list is l.i.t, the crew are super engaging, and they’ve even been known to host things like a Wild Flower Gin Masterclass. What’s not to love?

Okay, Blake Lively declared her caffeine hit from No Name Lane as “the best coffee of her life” and holy heck, if it’s good enough for Queen Blake… Better than any boujee on-trend Melbourne café, the coffee here has a cult following. The all-day breakfasts and gourmet lunches also go down a treat so if you haven’t been, remedy this immediately.

Translation, the man can cook anyone under the table…or the Gaggenau oven. Robertson’s most recent gig was Executive Chef at InterContinental Hayman Island Resort where he led the Culinary Operations across multiple outlets with diverse, international cuisines.

Like we mentioned, joining this icon is Executive Sous Chef David Vandenabeele. Originally from Belgium, David has over 25 years of experience in Michelin Star fine dining and luxury hotels across the world, including Belgium, Australia, London and New York. Most recently leading the F&B pre-opening operations for the launch of the first Curio hotel brand in Australia, this star is definitely Langham-worthy.

Together the exceptional team have created unique culinary offerings across the variety of new Langham Gold Coast dining venues. These range from a humble club sandwich and decadent buffets through to Japanese robatayaki, Michelin-starred Cantonese cuisine, and award-winning cocktails. Top spots to catch Blues on Broadbeach

Blues on Broadbeach 2023 (image supplied)
Blues on Broadbeach 2023 (image supplied)

It’s almost a rite of passage of our youth, sloshing (stumbling) around in muddy fields for days on end, the never ending festival queues and lost mates. So what do you do when your love of live music remains but the mere thought of that sentence makes you feel like a nap and your mud tolerance left right around the same time the bottle-o stopped asking you for ID? Well *drumroll pls* because one of Australia’s largest free music festivals is swooning and crooning its way back to us for another year.

The beloved annual beachside Blues on Broadbeach festival that never misses a beat is kicking off from Thursday 18th May until Sunday 21st. Now a GC institution, and you just know a festival that’s celebrating it’s 22nd year knows a thing or two about showing us a blue-dy good time.

Blues on Broadbeach 2022 (image supplied)
Blues on Broadbeach 2022 (image supplied)

Prepare the toes to get tapping, and the boots to get a scootin’, because the lineup slaps. Headliners include the likes of Australia’s guitar slinging virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel, Don Walker, and we just know Melbourne SKA Orchestra is really going to blow us away #goosebumpsalert. Don’t fret, we’re only just getting started – there’s also Indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The Putbacks, Chris Cheney, The Kevin Borich Express and Marcus Scott and the Bo-Keys.. (and we haven’t even got down to the little fonts yet!)

Blues on Broadbeach has crammed this carpal-tunnel inducing list of acts (srsly, it just keeps going) into 17 of Broady’s finest venues and stages, so of course we had to compile the ultimate guide of all the best spots to grab a bevvy and bite while you soak up the best of the fest. Who’s ready to get into the swing of things?

The Broadbeach Tavern Stage
The hub for locals to meet up for a chinwag, a bite and some brewskis is also one of the music hubs for the festival! Pull up a pew either in the Family Bistro, Sports Bar or our vote, the large outdoor deck to soak up both the music and the Autumn GC rays. Beer and jazz are a match made in heaven so this joint was born to stage (literally) some Blues on Broady bangers. In case you haven’t put 2 and 2 together, The Lucky Squire brings to life the story of Australia’s first brewer, the rogue swindler James Squire. Celebrating quality craft beers and modern pub grub, it’s a must-visit on your festival rounds.

The Unicorn of seafood has arrived on the GC!

Lobster Mornay, Unicorn Seafood Restaurant (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Lobster Mornay, Unicorn Seafood Restaurant (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Who doesn’t love an all-day menu – and an extensive, Mediterranean seafood infused one at that – and we know you all do, so #AllEyesOnUs. GC, may we present Unicorn Seafood Restaurant and no, this is not us describing its supernatural deliciousness (although, there’s that too) – it is literally named Unicorn Seafood Restaurant. This may ring a bell to Kingscliff folk and for good reason, because both unicorns share the same maker and yeah, this is beginning to sound like the next sci-fi instalment of Star(fish) Wars. Time for us to scale back on the seafood and mythical horse funnies and get back to the task at hand – telling everyone how so-fish-ticated the food is at Phoenician’s newest eats destination.

Earning a rep as the best seafood restaurant on the NSW north coast, Unicorn Seafood Kingscliff didn’t let a little ole thang like Rona get in the way, opening its doors mid-pandemic and never looking back. Fast forward to February this year and second time is definitely a charm, with the Broadbeach arm setting the local foodie scene alight with its seafood-erranean (the Bennifer of seafood and Mediterranean) goodness.

Unicorn Seafood Restaurant interior (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Well known for delivering a seamless dining experience with impeccable food, service and amazing ambience to boot, proud local owners Mr. and Mrs. Sharma has produced another o-fish-al crowd favourite. Upon entering the space, you’re suddenly living your best life in the exotic surrounds of the Mediterranean, with refreshing blue and white hues and relaxing ocean murals. Combined with a welcoming, relaxed and laid-back vibe, it’s an all-rounder done right. Mixed booth and chair sitting adorn the inside, and outside dining gives us the GC meets coastal Euro feels.

To start proceedings, we recommend the Beetroot Feta with pita bread and a round of Oysters (any which way you like). If you’re keen on an entrée (same) and crustaceans tickle your fancy (same again), it’s no accident that the $50 Lobster Mornay here is the signature special and people pleaser. And if you don’t order it, make sure your +1 does because sharing is caring and if they object, well that’s just ‘shellfish’.

The Whole Sole is another Unicorn specialty with natural flavours in abundance, and if you feel like going all out then friends, behold the Seafood Platter for Two. It has all our ocean’s finest, including fresh king prawns, smoked salmon, mixed dozen oysters (natural, mornay and Kilpatrick), barbequed bugs, barbequed prawns, garlic prawns, fish, calamari, lobster mornay and fresh fruits to freshen the palette. There are also several prime meats, pastas, poultry and vegetarian dishes on offer so if seafood doesn’t float your boat, trust us – there are endless mouth-watering alternatives that will.

If you’re still hungry at this point (and we’d be surprised if you ordered the platter because we reckon it could feed a small country), how about Strawberries Romanoff for dessert or everyone’s fave, a classic Sticky Date Pudding. Please sir, I want some more!

Something else unicorn-status worthy is the wine (bottle prices range from $39 to $160) and cocktail menu. With around twenty to choose from, we suggest starting at the top and working your way down. Get the party started with an Oyster Shot with vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire and Tobacco, before playing posh with a French Martini with Chambord, vodka or gin, pineapple juice and garnished with a cherry on the rim.

So next time you’re Broady-bound, come sea for yourself that a real-life unicorn exists and enjoy a truly fin-tastic feed.
